“If you want to learn your limits as an artist, start a comic. “

The comic that you lucky folks find yourselves reading is the product of roughly thirteen years of development. The first crude Krumm drawing found its life in a darkened tenth grade health class back in 1995. Since then the character has gone through three or four different looks and has only really developed a definite story within the past four years. I had written it as a 200-ish page novel. The story addresses concerns I’d had throughout those years, such as moving to Florida, the possibility of the draft, politicians without the people’s best interest at heart, the loss of family and various other things. Being a big fan of the genre, I wanted to begin with science fiction but I didn’t want to do the tired story of a character being the “Chosen One,” destined to save the universe, win the girl and restore balance to the blah, blah, blah. I wanted the character to be humble. He could have fantastic adventures, but it would be situational for the most part. He would show up in places on his own path where a major story or conflict was already taking place and get mixed up into things and pushed until he has to act, kind of like real life.

Space is unforgiving, as I’ve heard it said, and so is Krumm’s universe. The villains outnumber the heroes, and decent people are few and far between. The galaxy finds itself in a kind of dark ages where planets are wary of outsiders, and sometimes just landing is an effort unto its own. The odds are constantly stacked against Krumm and his ongoing mission to reunite with his family.

My artwork up until starting this venture was mainly focused on concept and character design for video games. There was even a short, playable, bug-ridden side-scroller I had done in order to graduate college called “Smacked in the Head.” I had hoped that that work would help usher me into my future career and I had planned on making a full game once school was finished. However, after graduation I realized that I didn’t have a story. I made the decision to finally write Krumm’s down as a novel before I lived out my life and looked back regretting what could have been. As I said before, if you want to learn your limits as an artist, start a comic. Working on this project has forced me to really start learning more than just character design and to focus on perspective, color, inking, pacing, storyboarding and editing.

Seriously, I thank you for checking it out and I hope that you will come back often as I continue to grow as an artist and that you will explore Krumm’s universe with me for many years to come.
