The Last War
Mankind’s inauguration into space was not one of scientific discovery but a baptism of war. Like a message in a bottle, radio telescopes trumpeted our existence across the vastness of space and great mechanical ears strained in response. Our search for other life told whoever might be listening who we are and more importantly where we are. For the most part, the message fell on an unreceptive galaxy too consumed with fear and paranoia to bother with a fledgling race yearning to explore. But someone was listening.
They were a religious sect born out of the Trifid Nebula, calling themselves the Ra' Hage. To their ears our call was interpreted not as a message of peace but as a desperate plea for salvation, and they were happy to oblige as long as we proved ourselves loyal. With that they descended upon Earth in great ships demanding sacrifices to each of their celestial gods known as "The Thousand Lords."
Insulted by the refusal of an offer never requested in the first place, holy soldiers poured onto the planet bent on conversion of every living soul. The war had begun. Battle spanned the globe, reaching high into the skies, across its surface and deep within the planet itself.
Frail and lean in appearance, the Ra' Hage were transformed in battle by taking strength and endurance enhancers that filled their hard skeletal forms with the "holy essence" of their lords. Their armies marched across our world, sacrificing countless survivors to the gods.
City after city fell and mankind approached extinction. We retreated underground, taking with us the technology of the enemy to forge new weapons in the fires of the Earth. Not long had passed before they found us again, but luckily enough time had been bought. New weapons combining human and alien technology tore the Ra' Hage apart and, picking through the remains, human soldiers in their desperation began injecting themselves with the alien enhancers, becoming stronger and more resilient. Finally we found ourselves on a level playing field with the enemy, equipped with weapons that gave us a slight advantage.
