The Dominion: The last branch of the great unifying government had finally fallen and the galaxy entered the dark ages… An ancient institution known as The Dominion once existed to keep the peace and to regulate trade throughout the galaxy. It was a conglomeration of a multitude of alien races that set aside their differences for the common good.

Time passed, the Dominion grew more prosperous and eventually encompassed too many systems to be easily managed by a single leader. A council was formed and the galaxy was split into six large chunks where specially selected officials would govern each region. In massive alien courts these “Officials” would meet with the Chief Minister and, as equals, decide how best to proceed with matters of state.

Millennia passed until one of those officials, feeling he was governing his region better than the others, sought more control. He planned a coup and caused descent in the other regions. Fighting and mistrust amongst the six factions broke out while mercenary armies for hire began to line up. Endless years of warring withered and ultimately destroyed The Dominion along with all lawfulness in the universe. Thousands of races locked down their planets, reluctant to let outsiders in while ancient feuds bubbled to the surface. They braced for war and readied to attack each other at the slightest sign of weakness or aggression. For a very long time that is how it stayed, with interplanetary trade suffering greatly and the depths of space becoming fair game for raiders and pirates to prey on passing ships.

So it was when humanity finally managed to reach the stars, unwelcomed wherever they turned and greatly looked down on in their quest to find new planets to colonize.
